Free plan or paid? Play from 0:00
ElevenLabs review, verdict first: for a product demo voice, you can start free, and when you pay comes down to volume or one API limit. We’ll get to that limit after the demo.
We pasted a short welcome text from a SaaS, clicked once, and the numbers did not behave the way you’d expect.
One click, two takes Play from 0:18
It’s the kind of line you’d put at the top of a product demo, on the free account, with one click on Generate speech.
That one click gave us two takes, Generation 1 and Generation 2, and the text was billed once: 96 credits for both takes.fact [P1]
So a click is not a take. You get a free alternative to compare, and the docs add that you can regenerate each piece of content up to 2 times for free.fact [8]
For a demo voice, that’s exactly what you want. Pick the read that sounds like your brand, not just the one that comes out first.
The affiliate link is right under the video if you want to run the same test on your own text.
The Use button trap Play from 0:57
Next, changing the voice. You open the picker and click a voice. It plays a preview, and nothing else happens.fact [P3]
The voice changes only after you click the Use button on that row.fact [P3]
Small gotcha, but worth knowing before you voice a whole demo. Preview is not selection.
Our advice: a glance at the voice name before you hit generate saves a wasted take.
Once we clicked Use, we switched to Jessica and regenerated the same text. That gave us two more takes.fact [P4]
And the usage page still said 96 credits used out of 10,000.fact [P4]
That fits what the docs say about regenerating.fact [8]
Better still, every take stays in the History panel with its voice name, so you can replay an older take after switching voices.fact [P5]
That’s the workflow for a demo. One text, a few voices, choose by ear, keep the winner.
The counter that lags Play from 1:45
Now a trap. Right after generating, the counter under the text still said 10,000 credits remaining.fact [P2]
It only showed 9,904 after we reloaded the page.fact [P2]
This is the thing we don’t like. A counter that lags makes you doubt every click, and when you’re doing retakes on a demo script, you want the real number in front of you.
So the habit is simple: generate, reload, then read the counter.
What a credit really costs Play from 2:14
So what does a credit actually buy? According to the official pricing page, for V2 Multilingual models, 1 text character equals 1 credit.fact [2]
That matches what we saw: a text of 96 characters, billed 96 credits.fact [P1]
Credits are charged per generation request, not per download.fact [4]
Be careful if you use other tools in the same account: the page prices speech to text and music by the minute, and sound effects per generation.fact [3]
If you’d like to check these numbers on your own text, the link is in the description.
The API limit Play from 2:43
If you plan to wire a voice into your product, read this before you pay for anything. The voice library is not available via the API to free tier users.fact [7]
Here’s the real line. The moment you want the voice library from code, free is out.
That’s a decision to make before you build, not after.
What each plan costs Play from 3:00
Now put our test next to the plans. Our welcome text took 96 credits, and Free is $0 with 10,000 credits, so that text fits many times over before you pay anything.fact [P1]fact [1]
On the pricing page, the next plans are: Starter is $6 with 30,000 credits, Creator is $22 with 121,000, or $11 for the first month, and Pro is $99 with 600,000.fact [1]
Who pays, who stays free Play from 3:26
Who stays free: a founder recording one demo or one onboarding clip by hand. Short texts, a few voices, choose by ear. Our welcome text cost 96 credits.fact [P1]
Who should look at Starter: you make clips regularly and you’ve outgrown the free allowance.
Creator and Pro are about volume. You decide by counting the characters you really generate in a month.
Who it’s not for: anyone who needs the voice library inside their own app on a free budget.fact [7]
And if you cancel, the subscription stays active until the end of the current billing cycle.fact [5]
If this saved you some time, a like helps, and a comment with your use case helps even more. Subscribe if you want more tool checks like this one.
